The Giving Heart initiative is built on a profound truth: healing happens when we shift from
receiving to giving. For youth who have felt broken, hopeless, or worthless, the act of serving
others becomes a pathway to rediscovering their inherent value and purpose.

The Power of Chesed

In Hebrew, “chesed” means loving-kindness—unconditional acts of goodness that
reflect our deepest humanity. For at-risk youth, engaging in chesed is
revolutionary. It says: You are not your past. You are not your struggles. You have
something valuable to offer the world.

Through regular community service activities, our participants move from
isolation to connection, from despair to purpose, and from self-focus to service.
The transformation is tangible.

“When you’ve been on the receiving end for so long, being able to give to someone else changes everything. It reminds you that you matter, that you
can make a difference.”

Our Chesed Activities

Transformation Through Service

One of our participants, a young man who struggled with addiction and homelessness, joined our hospital visit program
reluctantly. “I’m the one who needs help,” he said. “What do I have to give?”

After his first visit—sitting with an elderly patient, listening to their stories, offering companionship—he returned to
the drop-in center with tears in his eyes. “He thanked me,” the young man said. “He said I made his day. I haven’t felt needed
like that in years.”

That moment sparked a change. He became a regular volunteer, eventually finding stability, employment, and a renewed
sense of purpose. Today, he mentors new participants in the Giving Heart program.

How to Apply for Residency

All Lev Zion participants are encouraged to join—no experience necessary, just a willing
heart. These activities are also open to community volunteers who want to support our
mission.
